some causes can be problematic all year such pet dander. For many, these symptoms can significantly impact daily life, making it hard to enjoy the outdoors or even concentrate on work and other activities. Additionally, hayfever can exacerbate skin conditions like adult eczema and psoriasis.

What is Kenalog and How Does It Work?

Kenalog is a corticosteroid injection used to treat severe hayfever symptoms. Administered intramuscularly, Kenalog works by reducing inflammation in the body, thus alleviating the symptoms of hayfever and other allergies. This treatment can provide relief for the entire hayfever season, allowing you to enjoy life without the constant nuisance of allergies. This versatile medication can also provide relief for certain skin conditions.

Special Considerations for Younger Patients

We are the only clinic in the area offering Kenalog injections to 14–17-year-olds, subject to the following criteria:

Parental/Guardian Consent: Written consent is required.
Presence at Appointment: A parent or guardian must be present during the treatment.
Medical Referral: A referral letter from a GP or consultant specifying the dose (adult dose is 40mg/1ml) is mandatory. Referrals can be sent directly to us via email at contact@peppermintclinic.co.uk.

Treatment Details

The treatment consists of a single injection to the buttock, administered once or twice a year (no more than three times annually for severe cases). This regimen effectively suppresses the inflammatory response, making day-to-day life more manageable.

What areas can be treated?

It is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It can also be used for other areas such as the mouth and neck whilst also being an approved treatment for migraine relief and excessive underarm sweating – Check out our menu to read more about our advanced injectable aesthetics treatments.
How long until I see visible results?

You will not see a result straight away. It takes 2-3 days* to begin working, and approximately 2-3 weeks* to see the full effect. If after 3 weeks you are not 100% satisfied, get in touch with us and we can book you in for a top-up treatment free of charge. *Alluzience® begins working within 24 hours so visible results may be seen sooner than with standard botulinum toxin-a products.
How long do the results last for?

Botox® and Azzalure® generally last 3-4 months. There will certainly be patients in which it lasts longer, in the 4–6-month range, or shorter, in the 2-month range. It is also common for first time users to notice that it may not last as long initially but may last longer after the second treatment. Alluzience® is an advanced botulinum toxin-a new wrinkle-relaxing injection launched by Galderma, the world’s largest independent dermatology company). It starts to work sooner than other standard botulinum toxin brands and can last up to 6 months. Individual lifestyle choices may affect the longevity of the treatment e.g. people who exercise a lot or are very expressive may find the effects fade faster.
What products do we use at Peppermint Clinic?

We use Botox®, Azzalure® and a fairly new product called Alluzience®. Alluzience® has the potential to last up to 6 months so you can reduce the number of treatments you undergo per year, but it is not suitable for all areas. If you have questions, please contact us to discuss the individual products in more detail or book a free consultation to come in and have all your questions answered and discuss your suitability for the treatment, your goals, and expectations in more detail.
Does it hurt?

Pain is very subjective and personal - how we feel pain varies a lot from person to person and from time to time, e.g. studies have shown that women rate pain significantly higher in menstrual and premenstrual phases than during the rest of their cycle. A small pinch or sting that you would expect from inserting a small needle into any part of the body and you may feel a brief stinging sensation. The site of injection also influences the sensation of pain e.g. injections around the lips might feel more sensitive than those on the forehead.
Pre-treatment do’s & don’ts

Schedule your appointment at least 4 weeks prior to any special event or holiday to allow time for complete healing and optimal results. Reschedule your appointment if you develop a rash, cold sore or blemish in the treatment area. You should avoid taking blood thinning medications and anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen for the 2 weeks leading up to your treatment. Also avoid aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John's Wort, and Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements. You may wish to consider taking arnica tablets, available from most pharmacies, for one week prior and one week post treatment can help reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment. Alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising. Discontinue Retin-A two (2) days before and two (2) days after treatment.
Post-treatment do’s & don’ts

Avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for 24 hours after treatment. Avoid aggravating the injection site by rubbing or massaging the area. After 6 hours, you may gently wash the injection site but not before then. Avoid lying down for the first 4 hours post treatment. It is best to avoid alcohol for 24 hours post treatment. If possible, do not restart any blood thinning medication for several days after your treatment. If you are taking prescription blood thinning medication, please contact us to discuss your treatment options or book a free consultation to discuss this aspect of your treatment further. Avoid heat, tanning, self-tan, and tanning beds for 72 hours post treatment. Avoid any facials, laser treatments, or microdermabrasion for a minimum of 10 days following your procedure. If you are unsure about how long to wait before having a certain procedure, contact us or ask your practitioner during your appointment. Using a good sunscreen will protect the longevity of your treatment. Wearing sunglasses to reduce squinting will protect the longevity of your treatment.

The Science Behind It

Triamcinolone acetonide, the active ingredient in Kenalog, is a Corticosteroid. The mechanism of action of triamcinolone acetonide is as a Corticosteroid Hormone Receptor Agonist.

It is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid that functions by binding to specific cytosolic glucocorticoid receptors. Once bound, it interacts with glucocorticoid receptor response elements on DNA, altering gene expression. This leads to an induction of the synthesis of certain anti-inflammatory proteins and the inhibition of the synthesis of certain inflammatory mediators. As a result, an overall reduction in chronic inflammation and autoimmune reactions is achieved.

Breaking it Down

Kenalog injections work by using a powerful steroid called Triamcinolone acetonide to reduce inflammation in the body. It works by binding to specific receptors in cells. It essentially tells the cells to produce more anti-inflammatory proteins and fewer pro-inflammatory ones. This helps alleviate symptoms of hay fever and other allergic reactions by calming the body's immune response.
