Combatting Excessive Sweating: Insights into Hyperhidrosis and Treatment Options

Understanding Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition that causes a person to sweat excessively. It can affect the whole body or just certain areas – common armpits, palms of hands, soles of feet, groin, face or chest. Whilst excessive sweating is not serious threat to your health, it can be embarrassing and distressing, impacting your quality of life and may lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.

What Defines “Excessive Sweating”?

There is no definitive amount of sweating that is “normal” however, if you find yourself altering your activities for fear or making your sweating worse, or avoiding shaking hands with someone as you feel self-conscious about your sweaty palms, or sweating is affecting your daily life in any way, you may have hyperhidrosis.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

There are two different types of hyperhidrosis.

Primary: has no obvious cause and is thought to be the result of faulty nerve signals that trigger the eccrine sweat glands to become overactive.

Secondary: has an identifiable cause such as pregnancy, the menopause, anxiety, certain medications, thyroid problems, etc.

Diagnosis

It is important to see your GP if lifestyle modifications, like stronger antiperspirants and avoiding triggers, have not helped, you have been experiencing excessive sweating for 6 months or longer and it is interfering with your daily activities.

Your GP can help diagnose and try to rule out any underlying medical condition that may be causing the hyperhidrosis. They may refer you to a dermatologist.

Treatment Options

There are a number of treatment options available to treat Hyperhidrosis. One of which is Botox® injections in the armpit area. Some patients may be able to get this treatment funded by the NHS, but most will need to pay privately.
