LED Light Therapy
We Are All Influenced by the Power of Light
What is LED Light Therapy?
Light has many positive effects on our bodies; it helps us to produce essential vitamin D, triggers growth, promotes wellbeing and makes our skin glow!
Phototherapy occurs naturally all around us and is based on the principle that our cells absorb light and use it fuel natural rejuvenation and repair processes.

Different wavelengths stimulate different effects in the skin. We know that on-going exposure to UV light is very damaging but controlled levels of Red, Blue and Near Infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial.

A celebrity skin care favourite, LED Phototherapy is the application of these beneficial wavelengths into the skin’s deepest layers to energise our cells with proven rejuvenating results. It is a natural response similar to that of plant photo-synthesis through a process known as photobiomodulation (PBM). Skin cells that are energised function better and can regenerate up to 200% faster which in turn leads to a more youthful, healthy and radiant complexion.
How Does this Improve Your Skin?
LEDs emit photons, which are delivered into our skin and absorbed by our cells. When absorbed, the cells become photoactivated, essentially energised. With this increased energy, every cell, organ, and tissue in the body, including your skin, functions better. Think of it as helping our cells operate as if they have had a full night’s sleep and a well-balanced breakfast.
When cells are in a photoactivated state, one or more of the following can occur:
-
If the cell is damaged or compromised, it will repair itself or be repaired.
-
If the cell has a specific function, such as collagen and elastin synthesis by fibroblasts, it will perform that function more efficiently.
-
If proliferation (cell growth and division) is needed, the cell will proliferate.
What this means for your skin is all the signs and symptoms of skin aging, like skin wrinkling, rougher skin, thin/crepey skin, reduced elasticity are all targeted and improved.

What are the Main Benefits of this Treatment?
The main benefits seen in clinical trials of low-level light therapy (LLLT) for skin rejuvenation are:

-
reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
-
enhanced radiance
-
refinement in skin texture
-
improvements in overall skin tone
-
increased elasticity (less evidence for this compared to the other benefits listed)

Are all LED Light Therapy Treatments the Same?
Despite nearly 5,000 peer reviewed publications, LLLT still faces scepticism and has varied findings. The wide range of parameters that can be applied (wavelength, irradiance, treatment duration, and repetition) has led to some contradictory results.
The current evidence demonstrates that the most important factor in LLLT is the wavelength. Without the right wavelength you won’t achieve absorption. No absorption = no reaction!
Let’s break it down by colour: Wavelengths correspond to colours like purple/blue (400-495nm), green (500-565nm), yellow (570-590), orange/amber (590-620), red (625-700 nm), and near-infrared (NIR) (800-1200) lights. Each colour interacts with our skin uniquely. However, their effectiveness varies. Shorter wavelengths, such as yellow, green, or purple/blue, often lack depth penetration, resulting in a superficial impact.

From all the data published over the last 30 years two wavelengths have been highlighted as having the greatest effect on the skin: 633nm red light and 830nm near-infra red (NIR) light. Red and NIR reach deeper layers of the skin helping to improve the skin’s structure and appearance. A third wavelength 415nm blue light has been shown to be effective in treating inflammatory acne vulgaris (but is not beneficial for whiteheads or black heads).
